The Little Guy´s Guide to Press Releases

Why Write Them

Writing a press release is possibly the single fastest way to get the word out about your new business, any updates to your existing business, success stories you´ve had, and getting indexed by the search engines. They are different from articles in that they must be newsworthy and tell a story, not just discuss an issue, product, or service like you can in an article. It gets your site high on the search engines temporarily and generates a quick although short-lived buzz about your site.

What to Include in Them

Don´t even think about using any language that sounds promotional. Nobody will read it. You MUST sound like an objective third party (reporter) that is interested only in sharing the truth. The press release must stick to the facts, and only include statements with real names behind them. Every press release should include the following:

  • Headline
  • Subtitle
  • Summary
  • Author Name
  • Body of the News(the story, the scoop, whatever)
  • Company Name
  • Full Contact Information
  • Keywords
  • I recommend including the domain name you are promoting somewhere in the press release as a non-clickable link because many free submission services don´t allow clickable links but people who read your press release and get genuinely interested will copy and paste your domain into their browser. It´s a fair, white-hat way to get around the problem and still get your press release approved.

    Where to Send Them

The following list is not comprehensive but these agencies are awesome. Most of these are free, some have paid options as upgrades.

    ArriveNet.com
    Free-Press-Release.com
    PressMethod.com
    OpenPR.com
    InternetMarketingNewswatch.com

    PrLeap.com
    AddPr.com

Now comes the fun part, check up tomorrow on Google for your site and watch the press releases appear. If you´ve selected carefully your press release title and body text to include important keywords, your release can even make the top ten spot for those the next day. I know because I´ve done it. Good luck to you all, there´s enough out there for all of us!
